The Fertile Ground Project Promotional Poster

The Fertile Ground Project was established to help spread awareness of the food shortage epidemic in Mississippi, specifically in Jackson.

With this goal in mind, the main focus of this poster is to show the impact of having limited resources within the community. This poster highlights the illusion of having access to healthy and sustainable foods.

But the reality is that the community, especially the lower-income families, only has the funds and access to cheaper, greaser food sources.

This piece was accepted into the 2020 Mississippi Collegiate Art Competition and the 2020 Mississippi State Juried Student Art Exhibition.

Inspiration

I wanted to approach this with a clever approach with form and shape.

I studied several different posters that focused on subtle thinking rather than being completely obvious about the lesson behind the poster.

Next was the execution of the poster’s imagery. I chose to use illustration with bright colors and textures, almost in a retro-type of style. This is where I looked at several old retro advertisements and noticed the use of bitmaps in the majority of them.

I chose this method to have almost an ironic face as the message of Fertile Ground is the tragedy of food shortage within a community.
